Add new wood only if it is required. It is important to match the age, grade and species of the new flooring to the current one. If needed than only sand the area which is to be repaired lightly. Next step is to vacuum the room before proceeding any further.

Once you are through with that use plain water or a less amount of Trisodium Phosphate solution to wash the floor. Make sure that the new wood does not get wet. It is important to leave the floor afterwards for at least a day to let the solution dry. Then use a wax remover on the portions which are old and again leave them for a day or two.

Here are some things that you may need for refinishing the hardwood floors. You need to denatured alcohol, lacquer thinner, and a corrosion resister. Also you will need a quality oil finisher which is exactly the color of the current floor or at least very close in tone. Some chemical resistant refinishing gloves, a stick to polish the floors, a pan which resists chemicals and a machine with steel wool pads to polish the floor after its all done. All this is easily available at local paint shops.

Take an equal proportion of denatured alcohol and lacquer thinner in a large cup or can and formulate a mixture. Then put some of it in a glass dish and start applying it to different parts of the floor. Stain the new wood so that it blends in with the old floor. Next, leave the floor for a couple of days. The final step to refinish the hardwood floors is the sealing of the entire floor. The most famous choice of sealant is Polyurethane. The best way to go about with it is to apply all these three coats. And at the end you will have hardwood floor which will be like new and you wont have to do anything about it again for quite a long time.
